Reflection (Part 5) - Changes of thoughts on both being a citizen in Hong Kong and in your occupational aspirations (Excerpts)

Reflections 🙋

On being a HK citizen ...

"The efforts put into conservation work in Newcastle is much more than that in Hong Kong as the British treasure their history and realize the fact that demolition of buildings is irreversible. Hong Kong removes lots of old buildings with historical values and replaced them with modern plaza or commercial building. We may have to re-think on our attitudes towards conservation."

Raina

"I found out that the nature of industries are very different in the UK comparing to HK, large scale manufacturing is common in the UK but not in HK. Also, heavy industries are seen in the UK but not in HK."

Watson

"Hong Kong is not really a good place for science students to develop their career in field related to science. Not much funding and support were given by the government. Science-related jobs are not popular in Hong Kong. Lots of talented people have to end up working in subjects unrelated to scientific research. I am very disappointed as a Hongkonger and I really hope that more resources will be put into developing science-related industries in the future."

A fruitful trip to Newcastle

On Occupational Aspirations...

"The occupation options in UK are much more diversified than I thought. There are choices that are not commonly seen in HK. I should look to the whole world and seek for the occupation I am most interested in."

Raina

"I was particularly impressed by their use of digital methods in promoting themselves, such as the use of LinkedIn profiles which allow potential employers to browse through their past records instead of reading a CV. I certainly hope that I would be able to use these skills and methods when I apply for jobs."

Thomas

"In this study tour, I learned how to use LinkedIn to expend my interpersonal network and increase my career possibilities. This is a very useful tool to discover jobs that is suitable for me. Meanwhile, I can follow different companies to stick close to the market. Therefore, I can know about job vacancy and the motion of the company immediately."

An excellent tour spent with these lovely people

"The interaction with other Asian students there (Newcastle) also gave me some insight, that it is possible to pursue a career here in the UK, or at least APAC branch of the UK based firms. The fact that 60% of jobs here in the UK are from referrals does give me some mixed feelings - one part owing that I have built some great contacts like Dr. Pike, and one part owing that it'd be hard for corporations to sponsor me a visa, let alone referring."

Carmen

"Credits to the career talk in this tour, I am now aware of the truth that sticking myself in an office and doing repeated things without frequent interaction with people is definitely not my expectation of my future job."
